Anaesthesia for fibreoptic bronchoscopy.

Fibreoptic bronchoscopy is a useful diagnostic aid but may result in difficulties when associated with endotracheal anaesthesia. As a result, adequate ventilation may be difficult in patients with impaired pulmonary function and, in particular, in female patients because of the smaller size of the laryngeal opening. In a trial of three methods of endotracheal anaesthesia in a series of 39 patie...

Comparison of nebulized and sprayed topical anaesthesia for fibreoptic bronchoscopy.

We compared the efficacy of nebulized (N) and sprayed (S) topical anaesthesia prior to fibreoptic bronchoscopy in a blinded study involving 54 patients aged 57 +/- 26 yrs (mean +/- SD). Cough frequency, recorded on cassette tape, was the index of efficacy. All patients received 100 mg lignocaine sprayed into the pharynx, or nebulized in random order prior to bronchoscopy, and all received intra...

Local anaesthesia for fibreoptic bronchoscopy: transcricoid injection or the "spray as you go" technique?

Local anaesthesia for fibreoptic bronchoscopy should be given by a safe technique that is not unpleasant to the patient and should provide acceptable conditions for the bronchoscopist. Single injection transcricoid local anaesthesia was compared with the "spray as you go" technique in patients having day case fibreoptic bronchoscopy. Patients were randomised to receive either 100 mg lignocaine ...

Premedication for fibreoptic bronchoscopy.

A randomised, double-blind trial of atropine, atropine plus papaveretum, and atropine plus diazepam given intramuscularly as premedication for fibreoptic bronchoscopy in 60 patients showed no difference between the three regimens as assessed by bronchoscopist or patient. Bronchoscopists frequently attributed a sedative action to atropine alone and their assessment of tolerance and sedation was ...

Topical nasal anaesthesia for fibreoptic bronchoscopy: patients' preference for lignocaine gel.

Two techniques for anaesthetising the nose before fibreoptic bronchoscopy have been compared. Fourteen of 16 patients given lignocaine spray found it unpleasant, compared with three of 20 patients given lignocaine gel. The two forms of local anaesthetic were found to be equally effective. Lignocaine gel is therefore recommended for topical nasal anaesthesia before fibreoptic bronchoscopy.
